Kids love to use their imaginations.

They revel in make-believe and pretending. Imaginary surroundings and fantastical scenarios fill their playtime. But there is something almost magical about remote control toys for kids. It’s like make-believe coming a step closer to real life!

More Than Planes, Cars, and Drones

Remote Control Toys for Kids - Fundemonium

There was a time when remote control, or R/C – also known as radio control – was mostly associated with planes and, for some, boats. Then the popularity of remote control cars exploded and it seemed like everywhere one walked there were toy cars zipping about under their own power.

Of course, today there are drones. Multitudes of drones and of every variety, size, and configuration imaginable. In fact, there are so many drones that it’s easy to forget that it was R/C toy helicopters that preceded them.

The truth is, however, the remote control toys for kids include far more than buzzing drones overhead or speeding cars underfoot.

Toy boats, gliders, tractors, tanks, robots, dinosaurs, and a number of other remote control playthings can be had today.

Interestingly, the first remote-controlled “toy” was classified as a boat. This was in 1898 when Nicolas Tesla demonstrated a remote control torpedo in New York City. Today, this is considered the very first radio-controlled toy from a device. And his torpedo is still considered the first R/C boat.

Here’s a brief history of remote control.

Choosing a Remote Control Toy for Kids

If it flies, floats, or drives there is probably a remote-controlled version of it. Toy vehicles are available in the form of

  • Rock crawlers
  • Monster trucks
  • Dune buggies
  • Racing cars
  • Tanks
  • Construction equipment
  • Sailboats
  • Motorboats
  • Helicopters
  • Planes
  • UFOs
  • And – of course – drones.

In fact, at Fundemonium, we even have an RC toy farm tractor!

When it comes to choosing an appropriate and suitable remote control toy for your child, you need to consider a few things:

  • Age
  • Interest
  • Budget

Today, there are remote control toy cars and other vehicles designed specifically for toddlers 18 months old and older. These toys have simple controllers made to fit little hands with easy to use colorful buttons. For slightly older kids around 5 to 9, the remote control toys and their controllers become a bit more complex and include planes and even small drones.

If your child is about 10 to 12 years old, the whole world of remote control is available to them.

Not every child is excited about cars. Or trucks. Or planes. In fact, kids are as individual in their tastes and interests as any adult. While one child may love to spend hours with toy cars and trucks, other kids have their eyes (and hearts) in the sky and may prefer planes or drones.

The good news is that there are most likely several choices of remote control toys for just about every taste.

Finally, your toy budget needs to be taken into consideration. This is not because all R/C toys will “break the bank” but the fact is that many of them actually can be quite costly. For example, one industry source put it this way,

“[E]xpect at least around $200.00 spending per vehicle, and with some more complete types of setup costing no less than $400.”

However, this is far from the norm and many varieties of R/C cars and trucks can be had for less than $20.

Drones, too, can be as little as $15 to $30 or so, depending on the style and quality. And, since we’re talking flight now, remote control planes for kids can be had for as little as $20 or as much as $120 or more, if you want to go there.
