“Collect cards. Play your hand. Throw things at your friends.”

That’s how the creators of Throw Throw Burrito describe this wacky card game-of-sorts in a nutshell.

Another brainchild of the creators of Exploding Kittens (also the name of the game company, by the way), Throw Throw Burrito is the world’s first dodgeball card game mash-up!

Players try to collect matching sets of cards faster than their opponents while simultaneously ducking, dodging, and throwing squishy airborne burritos. The cards collected earn points for players but getting hit by flying burritos causes them to lose points, as well.

Ready for some exciting, whacky game night fun?

Clear some space and put away the antiques, because you’ve never played a party game quite like Throw Throw Burrito. Try to build up points by finding sets of three matching cards in the deck. The goal is to find matches before anyone else does.

But wait! It gets better…

You can also steal points from your opponents by hitting them with weird, squishy foam burritos.

Declare war on your friends! Brawl it out with a neighbor! Or, best of all, have a duel to determine the winner.

This family-friendly indoor game is designed for 2 to 6 players and comes with a deck of 120 cards, seven tokens, and two weirdly cut foam burritos for throwing. But not to worry – these wacky burrito missiles are soft enough to throw at your great-Uncle Bob and he’ll hardly notice.

No pain, no guilt, steal points!

Throw Throw Burrito Instructions: How It Works

Here’s a brief overview of what the game looks like in action:

    1. Place the pair of burritos on a table and draw cards. Keep your cards a secret.
    2. Score points by finding three of a kind from the deck. Find matches before anyone else does.
    3. If someone plays Burrito Cards, an all-out battle ensues. Steal points from your opponents by hitting them with squishy burritos.
    4. Declare war on your friends. Some battles involve a handful of players, while others force the entire table to engage in a Burrito War.
    5. Have a duel to determine the winner. During a Burrito Duel, two players must stand back-to-back, walk three paces, and turn and fire!

In a Business Journals article interview, this is how Exploding Kittens CEO Elan Lee  Here’s how Lee describes the game:

“Everybody’s sitting around the table frantically trying to collect sets of cards. There’s no turns. Everybody’s going at the same time, so cards are flying everywhere. People are screaming. And every time you collect a set of cards, you earn a point. The trick is … at the same time, there are these cute, adorable, soft, squishy burritos being thrown around the table, and if you get hit by a burrito, you lose points.”

Who Would Come Up with Something Like Throw Throw Burrito?

Exploding Kittens began as both a card game and the game company behind it. The company – and the game – exploded onto the game industry scene back in 2015 when it set a record as the most backed game on Kickstarter to date.

The co-founders initially sought to raise $10,000 through Kickstarter, however, the Exploding Kittens campaign unexpectedly raised $8.7 million in just 30 days from 219,000 backers. Today, Exploding Kittens remains the number-one most-backed Kickstarter project in history.

Six years later, Exploding Kittens is still expanding with a current portfolio of ten games – including Throw Throw Burrito – and sales to at least 45 countries to date. To date, Exploding Kittens has sold over 15 million games in the last five years.

As a leading game and entertainment company, Exploding Kittens has a mission to inspire people to connect, laugh, and play fun games in the physical world.

So, who are the genius minds behind Throw Throw Burrito and its kindred products?

Exploding Kittens was started by former Xbox game designer, CEO, Elan Lee, and Matt Inman, the founder of The Oatmeal, a webcomic and humor website created in 2009. The company and its family of games strive to recreate game night for a humorous and fun person-to-person experience.

In a recent ToyNews interview with the company’s director of international sales, Joeri Hoste, he explained,

“It’s a kind of bringing people together, connecting them, helping them to generate memories and so on – rather than sitting on a couch and watching TV,” says Hoste. “That is something people respond to very well.”

It might be fair to say that Throw Throw Burrito is a gift provided by the lock-downs that ensued during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the article from ToyNews,

“It’s a – perhaps uncomfortable – truth, that the pandemic has been good for the gaming industry. People at home have spent a year looking for new experiences and different forms of entertainment, with demands and tastes only increasing in variety as that audience continues to expand and diversify.”

And Throw Throw Burrito certainly fills the bill for a new experience and a different form of entertainment!
