The last year and a half has been the most exciting time of our lives.”, says no one – ever!

We are all far too familiar with the stress and inconvenience that was brought on by the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent shutdowns and restrictions put into place. And one of the things we all missed is the freedom to gather with family and friends to celebrate events such as birthdays.

But the corner has been turned and, at Fundemonium, birthday parties are back!

A (Really) Brief History of the Birthday Party

Of course, no one knows when the first birthday party was hosted, but it likely didn’t include chocolate cake and ice cream!

As the Huffington Post notes, it all started with the ancient Egyptians,

When pharaohs were crowned in ancient Egypt they were considered to have transformed into gods. This divine promotion made their coronation date much more important than their birth into the world. Scholars have pointed to the Bible’s reference of a Pharaoh’s birthday as the earliest known mention of a birthday celebration (around 3,000 B.C.E.), but Egyptologist Dr. James Hoffmeier believes this is referencing the subject’s coronation date, since that would have been the Pharaoh’s “birth” as a god.

And the tradition of cakes and candles? Well, it appears we can thank the ancient Greeks for that:

The Greeks had a thing for offering sacrifices to the gods and as a tribute to Artemis, one of the best inventions ever came to be. The Greeks would offer her moon-shaped cakes. Cakes which were adorned with lit candles. This two-part symbolisation birthed the traditional confectionery we now adore. The glowing radiance of the new-found birthday cake recreated the beauty of the moon.

But what about presents, you ask? Well, according to historians,

It wasn’t until the Ancient Romans that the birthdays of regular people were celebrated – but it was only the men. The birthday of a man was celebrated every year with a feast, friends and family, and gifts… Women’s birthdays weren’t celebrated until the 12th century AD in the West. Kids birthday parties weren’t celebrated until this date, too.

Oh, and birthday cakes – the traditional cake that we are familiar with today is said to have been invented by German bakers in the 18th century. And, of course, no proper birthday party was complete without one ever since!

And speaking of birthday parties…

With a Science Party at Fundemonium, you and your birthday party guests will get to explore fun and weird science with your official Fundemonium lab assistant! “Fun” and “weird”? You bet! Our wild science experiments delve into the realms of energy, mechanics, and chemistry with projects such as:

  • Assembling stomp rockets
  • Learning about chemical reactions
  • Playing with gooey polymers

And then, when the science fun is done for the day, you and your guests can take your experiments home with you.

4. Slot Car Racing Party

Ready for some fast-paced and high-energy birthday party fun? Race real slot cars around our track with a Slot Car Racing Party. Never raced a slot car before? No problem! You’ll be shown how to drive slot cars by our official Fundemonium Crew Chief and get practice time driving around the racetrack.

After everyone has had a chance to practice driving their slot cars, the racing begins! Three guests race at a time, while the others are the “pit crew.” The pit crew’s job is to place wiped-out or crashed cars back on the track. Races last up to three minutes in length and every guest will have the opportunity to race multiple times. The race results are then announced at the end of the party.
