There are toys, and then there are toys.
Some toys are designed to replicate real-world items like trucks, dinosaurs, or entire kitchens. Other toys are small versions of imaginary things like unicorns, dragons, or video game characters. And then there are toys that do things.

Fidget Toys and Stress Balls: Small Toys for Big Kids, Too
Most adults are familiar with stress balls. And, as we’ve noted in earlier articles, they have often been considered the original “fidget toys.”
Perhaps the most commonly understood purpose of stress balls is to provide a tactile method for dealing with stress and anxiety. And stress balls are part of a larger “toy” category that are known as fidget toys.
Popular varieties of fidget toys include stress balls, squishy toys, fidget cubes, pop fidget toys, and a product known as NeeDoh®.
Clinical studies have been done that quantify some of the benefits fidget toys provide for managing and even relieving stress and anxiety. In fact, one hospital has noted that,
“In addition to the improved learning benefits, fidget toys can also reduce anxiety and stress, enhance dexterity, improve coordination and fine motor skills and assist in the development of muscles of small hands. Fidget toys are appropriate for all ages and genders and most developmental abilities.”
But what about those of us with large hands and a few decades behind us?
According to an article from Forbes magazine,
“Individuals with anxiety may fidget or make small movements when they are feeling anxious, restless, impatient or nervous. Fidget toys give these movements an outlet, which can help calm a person’s nerves, relieve stress and serve as a distraction in an overstimulating environment.”
Which is a great thing for those of us who have been intrigued by the recent popularity of pop fidget toys and those cute NeeDoh® glob balls. But what if we’re not stressed or anxious? The good news is that fidget toys can be used to simply relax.
There’s Something So Relaxing About My Little Fidget Toy
Aside from simply being fun, playing with fidget toys can also be calming, which then leads to a deeper sense of relaxation.
In fact, a post on the Healthline website points out,
“Fidget toys are applicable to a variety of conditions, such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or ADHD, providing an outlet for people to channel nerves or excess energy.
Even if you don’t live with any diagnosed conditions, fidget toys are still a helpful resource. They may calm you down during a stressful situation or provide a quick work break if you’re feeling creatively stuck and need to get back in the zone.”
Fidget toys are (mostly!) small, portable, and convenient. And most of them are silent – except for a few spinners and that softly satisfying “pop” from the insanely popular pop fidget toys. All of which simply means that even grown ups can have their favorite fidget toys with them at work or at school to help keep a more relaxed state of mind.
